After 40 years of explicitly supporting the death penalty, the National Association of Evangelicals has modified their position. Citing growing concerns over the human error in criminal justice, documented wrongful convictions, and the desire among many of their congregations to promote healing instead of retribution, NAE has recognized a split on the issue.

While not explicitly urging their members to adopt an abolitionist stance on the death penalty, this new statement creates space for Evangelicals who believe the practice to be unjust and immoral. Following the strong call from Pope Francis for an end to America’s death penalty, it’s becoming clear that communities of faith are becoming more aligned and active in their opposition to execution.
